Weekly Update: Week of April 25, 2016

 

Overview this week:

In Social Studies, we are continuing our study of the “story of stuff,” otherwise known as the Materials Economy. Students are learning about sustainable and unsustainable relationships between where “stuff” comes from, how it gets to us, and what we do when we’re finished with it. The unit will culminate at the end of the year in an interdisciplinary project with English, Social Studies, Science, and Math in which students write and perform a TED talk-style speech about how a specific ecosystem is impacted by the Materials Economy.

In English, students are learning more about the relationships between various persuasive techniques to support speech writing and performance. Over the next few weeks, students will be preparing to write and perform a speech about a favorite book or genre from the semester. Meanwhile, students are still meeting with me individually​ for their compare and contrast reading conference.


 

Need to Know:

1. Students are still working on their Genre Reading Goals for another month

– They should be filling out a genre entry form for each book they read toward this goal.

​2. Optional: Students can be working on the “countries of the world challenge

– This is the final round in which students can learn the location of ALL countries.

– Interested students can check their emails for more information.

3. Activity Day this Thursday

– Students should bring water bottles and snacks.

Weekly Update: Week of April 18, 2016

Overview this week:

In English and Social Studies, we are beginning into our final unit of the year: Relationships. Our major focus will be the “story of stuff,” otherwise known as the Materials Economy. Students will be learning about sustainable and unsustainable relationships between where “stuff” comes from, how it gets to us, and what we do when we’re finished with it.

Weekly Update: Week of April 11, 2016

Overview this week:

In English and Social Studies, students have designed a product to help solve a major world problem, which they researched in their future forecast task forces. They are working on creating an advertisement (print or commercial) and utilizing persuasive techniques to “sell” their product at the upcoming product convention.

In English,​ students will also be meeting with me for a reading conference in which they compare and contrast two books from their genre wheel goals. Students have individually signed up for a specific date and time this month.


Need to Know:

– Students will be displaying/presenting their “Future Forecast” product designs.

Weekly Update: Week of April 4, 2016

 Overview this week:

In Social Studies, students are brainstorming potential product designs to help solve the problems they have been researching in their “Future Forecast” task forces. Towards the end of the week, they will begin to design an advertisement (print or commercial) to “sell” their product at the upcoming product convention.

In English​,​ students will be applying what they have learned about persuasive writing in the design of their “Future Forecast” advertisement. They will also be writing introductions and conclusions for the presentation of their product. Starting this week, students will also be meeting with me for a reading conference in which they compare and contrast two books from their genre wheel goals. Students have each signed up for a specific date and time this month.


 

Need to Know:

1. THANK YOU to all parents who participated in a students requests for an interview!

–  Students learned lessons about their  topics and also about professionalism.

2. Parents are invited to the “FUTURE FORECAST PRODUCT CONVENTION”

– Wednesday, April 20th

– Students will be displaying/presenting their “Future Forecast” product designs

      – I will send out detailed information early next week

3. RETAKES FOR SHORT STORIES

      – for any portion of the rubric graded lower than a 5

– students can rework their story based on feedback, highlighting  changes they make

– they must go over their with me at tutorials or by appointment this week
